چکیده

the present research focuses on the changes of urmia lake level. for this purpose, two timescales have been considered. the trend changes of temperature, precipitation rate and quantitative values of climate type for the observational period from 1968 to 2011 (past scale) and from 2011 to 2100 (future scale) have been analyzed. general circulation model (gcm) is considered for simulating the values of the future meteorological components, and statistical models have been used for modeling the lake’s level in future decades. one of the most significant results achieved for the future decades is the increase of the lake’s temperature for around 1.5 degrees centigrade till 2100 in comparison with the long-term average of 1961 to 1990. furthermore, the values extracted from precipitation rate and climate type of the zone also indicate a remarkable decrease of quantitative values in the future decades. accordingly, the climate type extracted for the year 2100 with numeric value of around 17.75 will be entered a new phase called arid climate for the first time in recent decades. the lake surface area is diminished from 5650 square kilometers in 1998 to about 2005 square kilometers in 2010. according to the results achieved by statistical models and time series, if this trend continues, the lake level will be reduced around 3 more meters in 2100.

Drying of Urmia Lake: modeling of level fluctuations

Background: Urmia Lake, the second largest hyper-saline lake of the world, has experienced lack of water and other environmental issues in recent years. Now, there is a danger of the lake drying out, which will affect the region and its inhabitants. This study aimed to present a model which can relate the water level of the lake to effective factors. Methods: Parameters that influence water le...

Urmia Lake (Northwest Iran): a brief review

Lake Urmia (or Ormiyeh) is one of the largest hypersaline lakes in the world and the habitat of a unique bisexual Artemia species (A. urmiana). Despite this, and several other values of the lake, little literature on it has been published. The present paper is an attempt to provide a brief review on various aspects of the lake. Urmia Lake, located in northwestern Iran, is an oligotrophic lake o...

Modeling Past Episodes of Erosion in the Lake Orūmiye (Urmia) Basin: Analogues for Future Landscape Dynamics

During the Holocene Lake Orūmiye has been subjected to significant changes in climate. These have impacted the surround vegetation and runoff, and erosion rates of the surrounding basin. Shifts in seasonal rainfall from winter to summer dominated patterns have resulted in dramatic changes in the Orūmiye Basin’s vegetation cover from grass to shrub dominated communities. The degree of ground sur...

Hydrogeochemistry of seasonal variation of Urmia Salt Lake, Iran

Urmia Lake has been designated as an international park by the United Nations. The lake occupies a 5700 km2 depression in northwestern Iran. Thirteen permanent rivers flow into the lake. Water level in the lake has been decreased 3.5 m in the last decade due to a shortage of precipitation and progressively dry climate. Geologically the lake basin is considered to be a graben of tectonic origin....
